Here are four concrete levers you can pull to move from talk about your values and purpose to actually embedding these in your organisation through action.
1. Define Purpose and Translate It (often)
Action: Revisit or establish your “Why?” – the impact you’re committed to. Then translate that into how your business creates that impact, and who benefits. Don’t do this every three years. Do this each year and check in on purpose during strategy reviews every 90 days.
Test: Can every team member explain, in everyday language, how their role contributes to that purpose? It does not matter if you are leading a non-profit organisation committed to ending youth homelessness, a for-purpose company focusing on ethical travel, or a family-run business committed to supporting people with their financial decisions – the process is very similar.
2. Align Strategy and Business Model
Action: Map how your business model delivers on purpose – revenue streams, cost structures, value proposition, stakeholder relationships and ask: Does the model reinforce the purpose, or undermine it?
Test: Are there strategic decisions that favour short-term gain (performance today) but undermine the purpose (and thus the long-term premium)?
3. Embed Values in Culture, Talent, and Strategy
Action: Ensure your values aren’t just framed, but practiced in your hiring, onboarding, performance management, and reward systems. And ensure that your values are embedded into strategic decision frameworks, underpinning every big decision in the business.
Test: Are your values visible in everyday decisions (who you promote, how you respond to mistakes, how you treat customers/partners)?
4. Measure and Communicate Impact (and adjust)
Action: Set indicators that link purpose and values to business outcomes (e.g., employee engagement, retention, brand reputation, customer loyalty, innovation metrics) and track results.
Test: Do you review purpose-linked metrics regularly? Is the board/leadership team discussing them alongside financial KPIs?
